Understanding Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which your body either can't produce insulin or can't properly use the insulin it produces. According to Diabetes Canada, rates of diabetes and prediabetes cases are on the rise in Canada. In fact, in their 2019 study, one in three Canadians have diabetes or prediabetes. We have assembled some helpful information to assist you in understanding Diabetes and what you can do to prevent it.

Prevention

Although there is no known prevention strategies for developing Type 1 Diabetes, there are a number of ways that you can reduce your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

Healthy Eating

It is widely known that the body requires a number of nutrients to keep it healthy and strong. Following a proper meal plan or diet can assist in preventing Type 2 Diabetes. Ensure that you and your loved ones are getting plenty of vegetables, plant-based proteins, lean meats, whole grains, and healthy fats and oils. Reducing your intake of high-processed foods, refined grains (i.e. white bread), sugary foods drinks can increase your chance of living a long healthy life, free of Type 2 Diabetes.

Regular Exercise

Moving your body, even if it's just a few minutes a day, can make a big difference to your overall health and wellbeing. Making time to exercise, take a walk, or practice yoga for even 20 - 30mins a day can help you prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Lose Weight

If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes or have a high BMI or are overweight, these can cause some serious implications to your health. According to Diabetes Canada, an eating and exercise plan that helps you lose just 5% of your initial body weight can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes from developing.
