Summer Skin Care Tips for Seniors

Now that we are in the throws of the summer season, lets remind ourselves of proper skin care needed for our elderly loved ones and those in our care. As more time is being spent outdoors, challenges to the delicate and thinning skin of older adults can occur. Here are some skincare tips to ensure the safety and health of aging skin.

Hydration

Water is the essence of life! Not only is it healthy for your cells and organs, it's vital for our skin too! Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. This will not only help you cool down in the summer weather, but also help to keep natural moisture and hydration in your skin.

Sunscreen

On days where you plan to spend time outdoors, it is best to apply sunscreen. Use a lotion with SPF 30 on all exposed skin. This will help to eliminate the majority of UV rays from affecting the skin negatively. Sunscreen should be reapplied throughout the day, especially after sweating or showering.

Shade

When possible, stay out of the sun during the time when rays are strongest: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can get sunburned even when it’s cloudy! So find a cool shady place, under a tree, umbrella, or gazebo when enjoying the outdoors. If you know that you will be out in the sun, choose appropriate clothing to provide adequate sun protection. Hats with wide brims can protect the sensitive skin on your loved one's face and neck, and lightweight, long-sleeve shirts and long pants can protect other areas.

Wash and Moisturize

Use warm water and mild cleansers, rather than harsh soaps and alcohol-based products, when washing hands and when bathing. After bathing and throughout the day, especially when returning home from the outdoors, help your elderly loved one (and yourself) compensate for any sun damage by moisturizing dry, irritated skin well. It is preferable to use lotions and creams without unnecessary ingredients. Simply formulated lotions soothe irritated skin without leaving an oily residue.

Enjoying the great outdoors is perfect for your mental and physical health and well being. Following these simple tips can make the experience safer and more enjoyable for you and your loved ones.
