The Benefits of Needlework

Part of spending time with older loves ones is to create memories. Doing simple crafts and activities with seniors creates moments to share and objects to cherish for the future.

One activity that brings nostalgia to our seniors is needlework. This may include sewing, knitting, crochet or cross-stitch. Many of our seniors share their stories of a time sitting with loved ones making special gifts or even clothing during their younger years. Some may still have those cherished blankets or sweaters they knitted in the past!

Activities such as knitting and embroidery, are perfect for many seniors, as it benefits the mind, the body, and the soul.

Improves Brain Function

As we age, many of us are concerned with cognitive impairment, such as forgetfulness or lack of focus. Knitting and other needlework are known to challenge the brain and help us to maintain our focus, and can even help to reduce the onset of mild cognitive impairment by 30 - 50%.

Maintains Motor Functioning

Many seniors have limited mobility and are unable to do general physical activity. When that is the case, needlework can assist in maintaining proper eye-hand coordination as it allows the brain and hands to work together on a task. This helps to maintain fine motor functionality in their hands and fingers.

Reduces Stress

It's been said many times that knitting, for example, is like meditation. Needlework has always been synonymous with feelings of peace and relaxation. It reduces anxiety, increases feelings of calm, and makes people happy and feel accomplished when the task is complete.

Whether on their own or with a friend or family member, needlework has many benefits to be mentally, physically, and emotionally active. It's also a great way to socialize, bond with loved ones, and gain memories and cherished items of your time with them.
