Jar Lid Sun Catchers

Sun catchers are instant pick-me-ups! Placing these colourful ornaments on your windows is a great way to brighten your space and your mood! Sun catchers are transparent or translucent objects, usually made with colourful glass, that disperses the sunlight from the outdoors, into the room.

These suncatchers are made simple, using colouring pages, olive oil, and mason jar lids! Adapted from 100Directions, we tried our hand at creating an easy, yet decorative work of art!

Sun Catchers with Colouring Pages

Here's what you need

  • Colouring page made on regular white printer paper

  • Markers, pencil crayons, ink pens, etc

  • Olive oil (or any type of household oil)

  • Paper towel

  • Cotton ball

  • Mason jar lid, rim only

  • Twine

  • Glue & scissors

How to make your Sun Catcher

Choose a colouring page image that will fit inside the mason jar lid or make your own drawing!

  1. Colour your colouring page, as you normally would, using any art materials you may have. This can include markers, pencil crayons, watercolour paint, or simple pan ink as the one we created.

  2. Once completed, use a cotton ball and dab olive oil onto your artwork. Making sure to cover the entire coloured surface. The oil will create a more translucent surface in the paper, making it easy for the sunlight to pass through. Let sit for about 5 minutes.

  3. Next, trace the inner outline of your jar lid onto your paper and cut out your art.

  4. Using a dab of glue, place your artwork (colourful side facing out) into the mason jar lid and secure.

  5. Wrap twine, colourful string or ribbon around the edge of your lid, and tie a knot, leaving about 4 inches of twine remaining so as to create a loop for hanging.

  6. Hang your colourful sun catcher in your window and enjoy!
