Health Tips for Dad

As we head into Father's Day weekend, we would like to take this opportunity to provide some health tips for adult men that can help them maintain good health, longevity, and personal wellness.

According to the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation (CMHF), 72% of Canadian men have unhealthy habits, putting them at risk for chronic conditions and diseases. The good news is, with small changes to their health habits, many of these risks are preventable and can make a big impact on lifestyle and overall well-being.

CMHF states that "maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, following a healthy diet, and not smoking can reduce risks of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and cancers”.

Lowering the Risk

In the case of Prostate Cancer, which is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men, eating a diet high in vegetables and low in fat, red meat, and processed meats reduces prostate cancer risk.

Foods, such as chicken or turkey breast, tuna, greek yogurt, eggs, and beans or lentils, are excellent sources of protein that are nutritious, help to repair muscle, and are low in calories to help manage your weight.

Adding in or increasing your physical activity levels can not only help to improve your mood, but it can lower stress, reduce blood pressure, and strengthen your body.

Research has shown that men are more susceptible to illnesses ranging from kidney failure to Type 2 Diabetes. Reducing fat intake and increasing physical activity can assist in the prevention of such diseases.

According to the World Health Organization, there are a number of immediate and long-term positive effects when you quit smoking. After 1 year, your risk of heart disease is about half that of a smoker!

The CMHF suggests for men aged 55+, check their blood pressure yearly, prostate health checks every 4 years, receive the shingles vaccine and consult their doctors for colon and bone health inquiries and concerns.

**Before beginning any physical activity, lifestyle, or dietary changes, always consult your doctor.**
